After her husband died, just over four and a half years ago, concert pianist Celia Batten bade farewell to her home of 37 years near Alresford, Hampshire and with his blessing, moved to Grove Place. Some long-time Golf Club friends of Celia and her husband had retired to Grove Place and initially introduced Celia to the idea. After she’d been to visit, Celia excitedly described the wonderful setting to her husband who was unwell at the time. A few days before he died, he told her, “Celia, it’s the place for you, move to Grove Place and then I can go in peace.”

Celia took him at his word and moved into a first-floor, two-bedroom apartment at Grove Place and hasn’t looked back. “I adore living here – Grove Place is full of happy, like-minded residents. My life is just so full, I am so busy every day, that I barely have time to go out to get the shopping done!” After almost 40 years of tending to a large garden, Celia wasn’t keen to take on more gardening chores and is delighted to tend to her pots of herbs on her balcony, as well as lending a helping hand to neighbours’ gardens from time to time.

Celia Batten - Grove Place Resident

Celia and her husband had previously owned a ten-acre plot of woodland, so strolling through the bluebell woodland walk – set in the 27 acres at Grove Place – is a lovely reminder of her old home. Despite moving and leaving behind her golf club, Celia is delighted to find herself on the putting green on a regular basis. “I love golf and they have a wonderful nine-hole putting green at Grove Place where I can be found every other day. Lots of the residents here enjoy golf too and we are often chipping and putting together as well as taking part in a game on Saturday. The team at Grove Place lay on a full afternoon tea with Pimm’s, scones and clotted cream every Saturday which is welcome after a game of golf!”

Celia is an active member of the choir; the members meet once a week and even put on three internal concerts a year, some of which raise money for charity, as well as for others in the local community. “The residents here really appreciate the choir and come along regularly – not only for the company, but also for sheer entertainment. We have visiting brass bands and orchestral recitals and so on – who needs to ever go out!” Celia loves cooking too, and regularly hosts lunch parties in her apartment for visiting friends and for those living at Grove Place. If she’s not entertaining at home, Celia often meets friends in the coffee room. “There really isn’t a retirement home as good as this – we sometimes feel as though we are on a wonderful luxury cruise, but in our own apartments!”
